The Art of Going Back: An Oracle of Memory, Grief, and Becoming

A Solo Exhibition by Brittney “Blue” Ferrette Washington

This exhibition gathers years of painting, photography, and collage into a living archive of personal and collective return. Built around the four themes of Return, Rupture, Remake, and Reverence, some of the works on view are a part of a 78-card oracle deck created by the artist as a tool for reflection, remembrance, and creative direction—especially for those who carry deep histories, work in community, or create from a place of emotion and vision. Together, they form altars of story and spirit—inviting visitors to remember what shaped them, to hold grief as a guide, and to find direction by looking back.

Inspired by the principle of Sankofa—a Ghanaian concept meaning “to go back and fetch what was forgotten”—The Art of Going Back is part exhibition, part ritual map. It offers not answers, but pathways. You are welcome here. You are invited to reflect, grieve, listen, and carry something forward.
