"I CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE"

An exhibition by the scholars of Metanoia’s Freedom School

In an effort to further the work of Metanoia to “amplify opportunities for a thriving community”, middle school scholars attending Freedom School in North Charleston worked with the Gibbes Museum of Art to turn their thoughts and dreams into works of art.

Thematically, each week of Freedom School focuses on the overarching theme of Making a Difference. Works featured in this exhibit represent the sentiments of these young scholars and showcase their desire to make a difference in all facets of their lives.
Scholars looked to the Picturing Freedom Exhibition, on display on the third floor of the Gibbes, for inspiration and insight to guide their art making process. A journey through their collection presents a look at the future they hope for, informed by the past that they study today.

I CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN MYSELF.
Inspired by Elizabeth Catlett’s printmaking-
I can carve away what doesn’t serve me and choose what stays to make the picture of ‘me’.
I CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN MY FAMILY.
Inspired by Merton Simpson’s abstract expressionism-
I can celebrate the strengths of my family members and support their areas of need.
I CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN MY COMMUNITY.
Inspired by J. Henry Fair’s photography-
I can dictate the narrative of my community and influence the way others see it.
I CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN MY COUNTRY.
Inspired by Aaron Douglas’ murals-
I can add beauty to everything I interact with.

I CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD.
Inspired by Faith Ringgold’s story quilts-
I can use art to communicate across lines of differences."
