About Time by Taylor Epps

Artist Statement:

My favorite thing to do growing up was look through my family’s huge drawer of old film photos. Each one felt like a clue into their past lives, and a glimpse of what the world was like before I’d gotten there. My favorites were always the imperfect ones; the candids of everyday life and objects that probably seemed so commonplace at the time, but which now represent a moment in history that can never be replaced.

As I grew older and moved away, I began to rely on these photos even more. They would
remind me of the life I had and inspire me to pursue the life I want, full of family and each moment worthy of cherishing. I began collecting my own drawer of photos, some of my own, some found discarded at secondhand shops around the world, all precious in their own way.

My practice allows me to give these photos the time and focus they deserve, paying attention to each detail as I translate it onto canvas. In doing so, I aim to offer a fresh perspective on these family treasures, ultimately transforming them into timeless compositions. I invite viewers of my work to explore the intricate beauty of family dynamics, the passage of time, and the enduring connections that bind generations.
